Challenge 2

Learning Your First Song

Today, you will pick the first of your 5 songs to learn.  The first step is finding where to start.  If you are brand new to guitar, I would suggest playing through on root notes first.  A root note is the note that the chord is built on.  If you have had problems with chords, a great way to get started is to play with single root notes and slowly add in one chord at a time until you are comfortable playing them all.  To learn more about root notes, check out this blog.

Another option is to learn the riff of your song.  If your song has a cool riff that’s not too fast, riffs can be a great way to start learning guitar.  Riffs help your fingers get comfortable with moving around the fretboard and that can be a great bridge to playing chords.

What to do today:

Pick a song out of your 5.

Learn the chords and decide if you want to start with root notes or full chords or the riff.  Whatever you choose, look it up on Google or fill out the form below and I’ll send you a personalized lesson.  Either way, find the chords for you song and learn a section of the song.  Either the intro or the verse or chorus.

Practice that one section until you feel comfortable playing along with the recording.

You can definitely longer, but try to practice for about 5 minutes.  We will add to this a little bit each day, but try to get at least 5 minutes of practice in each day.
